Jakarta, ThedailyID — Malaysia plans to import up to 500,000 tons of rice from Indonesia in 2026 as part of efforts to strengthen regional food supply stability.
According to reports, the initial purchase price could start at around Rp16,000 per kilogram. The plan immediately attracted attention because Indonesia has recently focused on maintaining domestic rice reserves and food security.
The potential cooperation reflects Malaysia’s growing need for stable rice imports amid regional supply pressures and fluctuating agricultural production.
Meanwhile, Indonesian authorities continue evaluating export readiness while balancing domestic stock conditions and national price stability.
Analysts said the large-scale import plan could create new opportunities for Indonesian rice producers and exporters if supply conditions remain secure next year.
However, observers also warned that the government must carefully monitor local rice availability to prevent disruptions in domestic markets and consumer prices.
The development comes as Southeast Asian countries increasingly strengthen food security cooperation following climate challenges, rising production costs, and global supply chain uncertainty.
If finalized, the agreement could become one of the region’s largest rice trade partnerships in 2026.
