Government Threatens to Shut Down MBG Kitchens That Fail Safety Checks

Jakarta, ThedailyID — Indonesia’s National Nutrition Agency (BGN) has warned that kitchens operating under the Free Nutritious Meals (MBG) program could face closure if they fail to meet food safety, nutrition, hygiene, and operational standards.

BGN Head Sudaryono said authorities will first provide guidance and conduct evaluations. However, officials will shut down kitchens that repeatedly fail to correct deficiencies.

“We will improve them, issue warnings, and close them if they cannot meet food safety, nutrition, quality, and operational standards,” Sudaryono said during an inspection in Bogor on July 24, 2026, according to CNN Indonesia.

He said the MBG program is a national priority and must operate responsibly. Protecting food quality and maintaining public trust remain key priorities.

Sudaryono said BGN will combine coaching with strict enforcement. The agency will reward kitchens that follow regulations and penalize those that fail to comply.

“If the SPPG is stubborn, undisciplined, or if its staff fail to meet the standards, then we must stop its operations. We have to be brave. Good performers deserve rewards, while poor performers must face punishment,” he said.

The inspections took place without prior notice. Sudaryono said surprise visits allow officials to assess actual operating conditions.

He also said the inspections recognize kitchen operators and staff who consistently follow technical guidelines.

During the inspection, Sudaryono visited SPPG Pasir Kuda 03, SPPG Cipaku 02, and SPPG Tegal Gundil 05 in Bogor.

He said most facilities already met the required standards. Their next challenge is maintaining food quality while expanding menu choices.

“The kitchens that already perform well now face one challenge, which is offering more varied menus so children and mothers who receive the meals do not become bored,” Sudaryono said.

He also encouraged the public and the media to help monitor the MBG program. He said public feedback would help improve services and ensure every kitchen complies with national standards.
