Will We See Ronaldo vs Messi at the 2026 World Cup? Ronaldo Responds

Jakarta, ThedailyID — Cristiano Ronaldo has addressed the possibility of facing Lionel Messi and Argentina at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, calling the scenario unlikely but admitting it would be a special occasion if it happened.

Speaking after Portugal’s match against Uzbekistan, Ronaldo was asked about a potential showdown with Messi during the tournament.

“I don’t know how to answer because the question doesn’t make much sense. But if it happens, it would be great,” Ronaldo said.

Although Ronaldo downplayed the possibility, Portugal and Argentina could still meet in the knockout stage depending on how both teams finish the group phase.

Argentina has already secured first place in Group J. As a result, the reigning world champion will face the runner-up of Group H in the Round of 32. Spain, Uruguay, Cape Verde, and Saudi Arabia remain in contention for that spot.

Meanwhile, Portugal still has work to do in Group K. The team’s final group match will determine whether it advances as group winner, runner-up, or one of the best third-placed teams.

If Portugal tops Group K, it could face Argentina in the quarter-finals. However, if Portugal advances as runner-up, the two football giants could meet in the World Cup final.

Alternatively, if Portugal qualifies as one of the best third-placed teams, a clash with Argentina could happen in either the quarter-finals or the semi-finals.

A potential meeting would renew one of football’s greatest rivalries. Ronaldo and Messi have dominated world football for nearly two decades. Both players continue to lead their national teams despite entering the final stages of their legendary careers.
