One Decision Helped a Family Avoid More Than Rp200 Million in Hospital Costs

Jakarta, ThedailyID — A single financial decision made years earlier helped one Indonesian family avoid more than Rp200 million in medical expenses. The story highlights the growing importance of preparing financial protection before unexpected health risks arise.

Joko Mulyono, an office worker, never imagined he would undergo multiple medical procedures within a few years. He purchased a sharia health protection policy after a friend recommended it, without realizing how valuable the decision would become.

His first health emergency came when doctors recommended surgery after persistent back pain. The treatment, surgery, and hospitalization generated medical bills of nearly Rp50 million.

“I was shocked. I didn’t have to pay anything for the examinations, surgery, or hospitalization because everything was covered,” Joko recalled.

His medical challenges did not end there. Doctors later discovered an intestinal condition that required a colonoscopy costing around Rp78 million. Four years later, he underwent another operation for blood vessel treatment using Endovenous Laser Ablation (EVLA), which cost approximately Rp102 million.

In total, Joko underwent three hospital treatments with medical expenses exceeding Rp200 million. His savings remained untouched because his health protection covered the costs.

Joko said the experience completely changed his perspective on financial protection. He also gained a deeper understanding of the mutual assistance principle, or ta’awun, that underpins sharia insurance. Under this model, participants help protect one another through shared contributions rather than relying solely on individual coverage.

“I don’t want anyone to face serious illness while worrying about hospital bills,” Joko said. He encouraged younger generations to balance investing with financial protection because illness can strike without warning.

Prudential Syariah said stories like Joko’s reinforce the importance of preparing financial protection before risks occur. The company noted that health protection helps families stay financially stable while focusing on recovery.

Chief Customer & Marketing Officer Prudential Syariah, Vivin Arbianti Gautama, said unexpected illnesses can affect any family at any time. She added that the company remains committed to providing comprehensive sharia protection covering health, life, and long-term financial planning.

Since becoming an independent entity in 2022 through 2025, Prudential Syariah has paid Rp8.5 trillion in benefits to more than 325,000 participants. Supported by over 64,000 marketing representatives nationwide, the company continues to expand access to sharia-based financial protection across Indonesia.
