Jakarta, ThedailyID — Introverts are often known for being quiet and speaking less. Because of this, people sometimes mistake them for arrogant or unfriendly.
Introversion refers to a personality style in which people recharge by spending time alone or in calm environments. They may also feel more comfortable in small groups than in large crowds.
However, being introverted does not automatically mean someone is shy, antisocial or unable to communicate. Some behaviors can simply be misunderstood by people around them.
According to Coach Johncey, several traits can make introverts appear arrogant even when they do not intend to send that message.
1. Being quiet can look like indifference
Introverts may stay quiet when they are in a group. Instead of competing to speak, they may prefer to observe and wait for the right moment.
Others can misread this behavior as arrogance. They may assume the introvert thinks the conversation is not worth joining.
2. They prefer spending time alone
Introverts often recharge by spending time on their own. Other people may see this as avoiding social interaction.
For introverts, however, being alone can simply be a way to recharge. It does not necessarily mean they dislike other people.
3. They use less verbal communication
Introverts may prefer meaningful conversations over casual small talk. Highly expressive or light conversations can sometimes make them uncomfortable.
As a result, they may appear quiet or less friendly. People who are more talkative and expressive may then interpret their response as arrogance.
4. They listen with focus
Introverts can spend more time listening and processing information during a conversation. Their serious expression may make them appear uninterested.
In reality, they may simply be concentrating on what the other person is saying. A quiet response does not always mean a lack of interest.
5. Their nonverbal signals can be misunderstood
Body language can also contribute to the misunderstanding. Introverts may avoid prolonged eye contact, use a neutral tone or maintain a quieter posture.
These signals can make others think they are being distant or uncaring. However, such behavior does not necessarily reflect how they feel about the people around them.
Being introverted, therefore, does not automatically make someone arrogant. Some communication habits can simply look different from what other people expect.
