Jakarta, ThedailyID — The Venezuelan government strongly rejected remarks from Donald Trump after the US president suggested the country could become America’s “51st state.”
The controversy began after Trump shared a post on Truth Social showing a map of Venezuela covered by the American flag with the label “51st State.”
The post quickly sparked backlash in Caracas and reignited tensions between Venezuela and the United States.
Venezuelan interim President Delcy Rodríguez firmly dismissed the idea and defended the country’s independence.
“That will never be considered, because if there is one thing Venezuelan men and women have, it is that we love our independence process,” Rodríguez told reporters after a hearing at the International Court of Justice in The Hague.
She also said Venezuelans deeply respect the country’s historical independence heroes and sovereignty.
The remarks came after Trump reportedly told Fox News that he was “seriously considering” the possibility of making Venezuela a US state.
Meanwhile, political tensions between Washington and Caracas have continued escalating in recent months following disputes involving former Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro.
Critics accused Trump of using provocative rhetoric toward Latin America, while supporters defended the comments online as political messaging.
Analysts also warned that statements involving sovereignty and territorial control could further damage diplomatic relations across the region.
Social media users widely debated the issue, with many criticizing the idea of treating another sovereign country as potential US territory.
Despite the controversy, Venezuelan officials insisted the country would continue defending its sovereignty against foreign political pressure.
