Jakarta, ThedailyID — The United States has used sea drones in combat for the first time, targeting an Iranian naval base during ongoing military operations in the Gulf.

The US Central Command (CENTCOM) said the attack took place on Sunday, July 12, and targeted submarine and warship maintenance facilities at Bandar Abbas Naval Base.

According to CENTCOM, three Corsair unmanned surface vessels struck the port in what marked the US military’s first operational use of sea drones.

“The three Corsair unmanned surface vessels struck the port at Bandar Abbas Naval Base, marking the first time American forces have used sea drones in combat operations,” CENTCOM said on X.

The military claimed the strike weakened Iran’s ability to launch attacks against commercial shipping in the Strait of Hormuz.

Meanwhile, CENTCOM also released video footage showing the attack on the naval facility.

In addition, the command said it launched another round of strikes at 4:45 p.m. local time on Monday.

CENTCOM said the operation marked the third consecutive night of US strikes against Iran under orders from the commander in chief.

The US military said the campaign aims to reduce Iran’s ability to threaten civilian vessels and commercial shipping in the Strait of Hormuz.

“These strikes will continue to impose significant costs on Iranian forces and degrade their ability to attack innocent civilians and commercial vessels,” CENTCOM said.

The latest operation came as military tensions between Washington and Tehran continued to escalate, although diplomatic efforts to reduce the conflict remain underway.
