Jakarta, ThedailyID — Police arrested a 17-year-old student after a homemade bomb exploded at MAN 3 Padang in West Sumatra on Tuesday, July 14. The blast caused no deaths or injuries.
Officers secured the school, closed nearby roads, and searched the campus shortly after the explosion.
Densus 88 spokesperson Kombes Mayndra Eka Wardhana said the device exploded once beside a classroom.
“It exploded once beside a classroom. There were no casualties,” Mayndra said.
Police identified the suspect only by the initial R, who attends the school.
According to Mayndra, the teenager learned to make explosives online after becoming interested in the 2025 bombing at SMAN 72 Jakarta.
Investigators are still examining the suspect’s motive and checking whether anyone else played a role.
Meanwhile, West Sumatra Police spokesperson Kombes Susmelawati Rosya said the student allegedly carried out the attack after experiencing repeated bullying at school.
She said the teenager chose to retaliate by building a low-explosive device.
Police continue to investigate how the suspect assembled the bomb and whether the incident exposed security gaps at the school.
