Jakarta, ThedailyID — The University of Indonesia (UI) has responded to controversy surrounding a Pride Month post published by student media organization SUMA UI on social media.
In an official statement, UI said the content reflected the editorial views of the student organization. The university stressed that the post did not represent its official position or the views of the broader academic community.
“The content is purely the editorial opinion of the student organization concerned,” UI said through its Director of Public Relations, Media, Government, and International Affairs, Erwin Agustian Panigoro.
UI emphasized that freedom of expression remains an important part of academic life. However, the university said students must exercise that freedom responsibly and respect ethical standards and social norms.
The university also reaffirmed its commitment to the values of Pancasila, Indonesian laws, and prevailing social norms. It added that respect for human dignity, integrity, and a safe academic environment remains central to its mission.
According to UI, universities should serve as spaces for dialogue and knowledge development. At the same time, the institution stressed that people should express opinions respectfully and in line with academic ethics.
As public debate over the post continues, UI has launched an internal review. The university is also evaluating the issue with relevant campus authorities.
Officials said the process aims to ensure student activities remain consistent with campus regulations and ethical guidelines. They also stressed the importance of responsible academic freedom.
Moreover, UI urged students, alumni, and the public to maintain a constructive atmosphere. The university also called on people to respect differing viewpoints.

Meanwhile, alumni of SUMA UI expressed concern over the post, titled Testing the Principle of Humanity During Pride Month. The content featured Indonesia’s Garuda emblem against a rainbow flag background. It also discussed Pride Month and discrimination against the LGBTIQ+ community.
In a statement shared through the alumni association’s social media account, former SUMA members said they regretted the publication. They argued that the content did not reflect the organization’s long-standing commitment to moderation, diversity, and nonpartisan journalism.
The alumni group also criticized the editorial board for allegedly ignoring feedback. They warned that the controversy had caused concern among students, alumni, and members of the public.
Despite their criticism, the alumni reaffirmed their support for freedom of expression. However, they stressed that people should exercise that freedom responsibly and consider ethical and social values.
Following widespread public reactions, SUMA UI later removed the post from its Instagram and X accounts.
