Jakarta, ThedailyID — Indonesia’s Ministry of Health reported two new suspected Hantavirus infection cases during the 16th week of 2026. Authorities are currently conducting laboratory examinations on both patients.
The suspected cases emerged in North Jakarta, Jakarta, and Kulon Progo in the Special Region of Yogyakarta.
Head of the Ministry’s Bureau of Communication and Public Services Aji Muhawarman confirmed the update on Wednesday.
“Currently, there are two suspected hantavirus cases in Indonesia,” Aji said.
Hantavirus is a rare viral disease that usually spreads through contact with infected rodents, including rats and shrews. People can become infected after exposure to rodent urine, saliva, or droppings. In severe cases, the virus can trigger dangerous respiratory complications.
According to the Health Ministry, Indonesia has recorded 251 suspected cases from 2024 through the 16th week of 2026.
Among those cases, authorities confirmed 23 infections and ruled out 221 others after testing. Meanwhile, four cases remain under examination, while officials could not collect specimens from three cases.
Aji said the country did not record any additional confirmed cases this week. Therefore, the total number of confirmed hantavirus infections since 2024 remains at 23 cases.
The confirmed cases have spread across nine provinces. Special Region of Yogyakarta and Jakarta each recorded six confirmed cases, while West Java reported five.
Meanwhile, Banten, East Java, West Kalimantan, West Sumatra, North Sulawesi, and East Nusa Tenggara each recorded one confirmed case.
The Health Ministry continues monitoring the situation while reminding the public to avoid direct contact with rodents and maintain clean living environments to reduce transmission risks.
