Jakarta, ThedailyID — The Swiss city of Chiasso will require dog owners to clean up not only their pets’ waste but also their urine under new public cleanliness rules.
The regulation will take effect in mid-August 2026. Authorities say the measure aims to improve hygiene and maintain cleaner public spaces.
Dog owners who fail to follow the rule can face fines of up to 100 Swiss francs (around Rp2.2 million).
According to the Chiasso city council, some owners leave behind pet waste and urine during walks. Officials say the behavior affects the city’s appearance and reduces comfort for residents and visitors.
The rule marks a first for Switzerland. Other parts of the country already require dog owners to collect solid waste, but they do not require owners to clean up urine.
Dog owners in Chiasso must now carry a bottle or similar container filled with water. They must use it to wash away their pets’ urine after walks.
A similar regulation already exists in Livorno, Italy. Local authorities introduced the measure in May 2026 after residents complained about unpleasant odors and poor sanitation.
Livorno also bans dogs from urinating near doors, windows, apartment entrances, shops, and office buildings. Violators can receive fines of up to 500 euros (around Rp10.2 million).
Unlike Chiasso, Livorno enforces the rule only from May through October, when warmer weather increases odor and sanitation concerns.
The new regulation reflects a growing effort by European cities to improve public hygiene while encouraging responsible pet ownership.
