Jakarta, ThedailyID — Indonesian passengers returning from overseas remained stranded in Singapore on Sunday (06/09/2026) after authorities closed Soekarno-Hatta International Airport in Tangerang, Banten.
The closure came after volcanic ash from Mount Anak Krakatau spread across the Greater Jakarta area and Lampung. The volcano has continued to erupt since Friday (04/09).
A group of passengers, remained in Singapore after arriving from Beijing on Saturday afternoon. The group had previously flown from Vladivostok, Russia, to Beijing on Friday afternoon local time.
After a 12-hour transit in Beijing, the group continued to Singapore on Saturday morning. They arrived at Changi Airport at around 2 p.m. local time.
The group planned to fly from Changi Airport to Soekarno-Hatta at 6:30 p.m. They had already waited at the gate since 5:30 p.m.
However, the airline later announced that the flight had been canceled. As a result, all passengers received accommodation compensation for one night.
The passengers then received a new flight schedule for Sunday at 1:55 p.m. WIB. However, the schedule remained tentative as authorities continued to assess Soekarno-Hatta’s operational status.
Previously, airport authorities closed Soekarno-Hatta until 9:30 a.m. Sunday. The closure also affected Halim Perdanakusuma Airport, Radin Inten II Airport in Lampung and Budiarto Airport in Curug, Tangerang.
The authorities took the step because volcanic ash from Mount Anak Krakatau had spread into several areas. Therefore, passengers must wait for further confirmation before traveling through the affected airports.
