Jakarta, ThedailyID — Volcanic ash from Mount Anak Krakatau reached Jakarta on Sunday (06/09/2026). The Jakarta Provincial Government urged residents to stay calm while remaining alert to the potential impacts.
Jakarta BPBD Chief Marulitua Sijabat said residents should follow official information about the volcano and ash conditions.
“The most important thing is that people do not need to panic. Stay calm, but increase your awareness and follow official information from the government,” Marulitua said in a statement released Sunday (06/09/2026).
According to Marulitua, the Center for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation (PVMBG) still places Mount Anak Krakatau at Level III, or Alert.
Meanwhile, the Jakarta Government issued several recommendations for residents as volcanic ash began to affect the capital.
First, residents should wear masks when going outside. Regular cloth masks may not filter volcanic ash particles effectively.
Residents should also close doors, windows and home ventilation. In addition, they should turn off fans or air conditioners that draw air from outside if ash affects the surrounding air.
The Jakarta BPBD also advised residents to reduce outdoor activities. This advice applies especially to babies, children, older adults, pregnant women and people with asthma, lung disease or heart disease.
If ash accumulates around the house, residents should wet it before cleaning. Sweeping dry ash can send particles back into the air and increase the risk of inhalation.
Residents should also cover food and water storage containers. People should not consume food or water that volcanic ash has contaminated.
Furthermore, anyone experiencing severe shortness of breath, chest pain, persistent coughing or worsening eye irritation should seek medical help immediately.

Marulitua also urged residents not to spread unverified information. Instead, they should follow updates from PVMBG, BMKG, BNPB, Jakarta BPBD and the Jakarta Provincial Government.
