Jakarta, ThedailyID — Scientists are turning sharks into mobile ocean sensors in an effort to improve storm forecasting along the U.S. East Coast.
Researchers at the University of Delaware have equipped sharks with small electronic devices that collect real-time ocean data before storms reach coastal communities.
Instead of viewing sharks only as fearsome predators, scientists now see them as valuable partners for monitoring the ocean.
The devices, known as CTD tags, measure water salinity, temperature, and depth by recording the ocean’s electrical conductivity. The sensors automatically transmit data to satellites whenever the sharks surface.
According to Aaron Carlisle, a professor at the University’s School of Marine Science and Policy, sharks are ideal for the project because they are abundant, widely distributed, and easier to study than protected marine mammals.
The research focuses on the ocean’s mixed layer, the upper section of seawater that plays a key role in storm development.
“The warmer this mixed layer becomes, the stronger storms can grow because it stores the heat that fuels them,” Carlisle said.
The team selected species that frequently surface, including shortfin mako sharks, blue sharks, smooth hammerhead sharks, and juvenile great white sharks. Their behavior allows the sensors to transmit data more reliably.
Researchers attach the tracking devices each May as sharks migrate closer to the U.S. coastline. The installation takes less than five minutes to minimize stress on the animals.
The tags also detach naturally after corroding over time.
Researcher Caroline Wiernicki said the sharks are helping scientists collect valuable environmental data rather than living up to their fearsome reputation.
The team hopes the information will improve weather models and strengthen storm preparedness for coastal communities from North Carolina to Massachusetts.
