Jakarta, ThedailyID — President Prabowo Subianto has ordered a significant increase in Indonesia’s disaster mitigation budget following a series of natural disasters across the country.

The disasters include an earthquake in East Nusa Tenggara, forest and land fires in Kalimantan and Sulawesi, as well as eruptions from several volcanoes.

The National Disaster Management Agency (BNPB) currently has an allocation of around Rp491 billion for 2026. The figure is significantly lower than the Rp2.01 trillion allocated in 2025.

For 2027, BNPB has proposed a budget of Rp1.003 trillion under the Draft State Budget (RAPBN).

Meanwhile, the Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysical Agency (BMKG) estimates that it will need Rp4.649 trillion in 2027. However, the agency has been given a budget ceiling of only Rp2.523 trillion.

The funding debate has also highlighted the need to strengthen disaster mitigation beyond emergency response. Disaster spending is expected to cover risk mitigation, research, detection equipment, maintenance, early warning systems and public education.

However, the government said there is no single ideal budget figure that can be applied across Indonesia. Each region faces different disaster risks and therefore has different funding needs.

Finance Minister Purbaya Yudhi Sadewa also said the government is prepared to provide additional funding if disaster response needs exceed the Rp5 trillion ready-to-use fund currently available.

The policy comes as Indonesia faces multiple disaster risks, including geological hazards, extreme weather and forest and land fires.

The government is therefore expected to strengthen preparedness and mitigation alongside emergency response to reduce the potential impact of future disasters.
