Jakarta, ThedailyID — South Korea has introduced Gabi, the country’s first robot monk designed to assist with Buddhist activities and spiritual interactions (May 8, 2026). The humanoid robot quickly gained attention after photos and videos of it circulated online.
Developers unveiled Gabi at Jogyesa Temple, one of South Korea’s largest Buddhist temples. The robot wears traditional gray monk robes and can greet visitors, speak, and guide simple prayer sessions.
According to local reports, Gabi uses artificial intelligence to respond to basic conversations and provide information about Buddhist teachings. In addition, the robot helps visitors learn more about temple rituals and Buddhist culture.
The developers said they created Gabi to modernize religious services while attracting younger generations to Buddhism and traditional culture. Therefore, the robot was designed to feel interactive and approachable.
However, Gabi’s appearance has sparked debate online. Some people praised the robot as an innovative blend of technology and spirituality. Meanwhile, others questioned whether a machine could truly replace the spiritual role of a human monk.
South Korea has increasingly integrated robots into everyday life in recent years. Previously, the country introduced robots for restaurants, education, and older people care services.
With Gabi’s debut, South Korea once again highlighted how artificial intelligence continues expanding into new areas, including religion and cultural traditions.
