Jakarta, ThedailyID — A giant iceberg flipped over off the coast of Ilulissat, Greenland, on Saturday, July 25, sending powerful waves across nearby waters in a dramatic event captured on video.
The footage, recorded by local resident Mona Hansen, shows the massive iceberg slowly tilting before rolling over and exposing ice that had remained beneath the surface. The sudden movement released a surge of energy that generated strong waves throughout the surrounding fjord.
A kayaker in the area also witnessed the event from a distance.
Despite the dramatic scene, authorities reported no injuries or damage because the iceberg was far from populated areas and vessels.
The incident occurred near the Ilulissat Icefjord, a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2004. The fjord borders the town of Ilulissat, often called the world’s iceberg capital because of the large number of icebergs that drift through the area.
Most of the icebergs originate from Sermeq Kujalleq Glacier, one of the fastest-moving glaciers in the world. The glacier continuously releases large blocks of ice into the fjord.
Although iceberg rollovers occur regularly in Greenland, scientists warn that they often happen without warning. The sudden release of energy can create large waves that pose risks to small boats and anyone nearby.
According to NDTV, uneven melting beneath the water causes the iceberg’s centre of gravity to shift over time. As the submerged ice melts, the floating mass becomes unstable until it eventually overturns.
Scientists describe the phenomenon as a natural part of an iceberg’s life cycle. However, the event can generate powerful turbulence and dangerous waves because of the enormous amount of energy released during the rollover.
