Jakarta, ThedailyID — Google is preparing to launch new wearable technology that could eventually replace smartphones in daily activities.
The company recently introduced its Android XR platform during the annual Google I/O 2026 event. The technology focuses on smart glasses powered by artificial intelligence and augmented reality features.
Google said the device can display digital information directly in front of users through transparent lenses while also understanding voice commands in real time.
The smart glasses integrate closely with Google’s Gemini AI assistant. Users can ask questions, receive navigation guidance, translate conversations instantly, and access notifications without touching a phone.
During demonstrations, Google showcased several advanced features. The glasses could identify objects, summarize messages, provide live directions, and even help users remember where they placed items.
Google also demonstrated real-time language translation between two people speaking different languages. The subtitles appeared directly on the glasses display during conversations.
The company is reportedly collaborating with brands including Samsung and eyewear manufacturers to develop the hardware.
Unlike earlier smart glasses products, Google aims to make the new devices lighter, more stylish, and practical for everyday use.
The Android XR ecosystem is also expected to support entertainment, productivity, gaming, and navigation experiences through immersive displays.
Industry observers view the technology as part of a broader race among major tech companies to create devices beyond smartphones.
Several companies, including Apple and Meta, have also invested heavily in wearable mixed-reality products in recent years.
Google has not officially announced a release date for the smart glasses. However, the company signaled that broader public testing and developer expansion will continue throughout 2026.
