Jakarta, ThedailyID — Indonesia is diverting international flights originally bound for Soekarno-Hatta International Airport in Tangerang to five alternative airports following disruptions caused by Mount Anak Krakatau’s eruption.
Transportation Minister Dudy Purwagandhi said the move aims to prevent passengers returning from overseas from becoming stranded or facing lengthy delays in their departure countries.
The five alternative airports are Kertajati International Airport in Bandung, Jenderal Ahmad Yani International Airport in Semarang, Yogyakarta International Airport, Juanda International Airport in Surabaya and Adi Soemarmo International Airport in Solo.
“We are encouraging the use of alternative airports so we can spread out passengers returning to Indonesia and prevent them from having to stay too long in the countries where their flights originate,” Dudy said at Soekarno-Hatta Airport on Monday (07/09/2026).
So far, only two international airlines have officially used the diversion scheme: Singapore Airlines (SQ) and Garuda Indonesia.
Singapore Airlines has reportedly changed its aircraft operations to Juanda International Airport in Surabaya. The airline has also added a new route to Yogyakarta International Airport.
Meanwhile, Dudy explained that diverted flights would not use their original schedules to Soekarno-Hatta. Instead, the Transportation Ministry is providing new flight slots based on each airline’s operational needs.
Other airlines are still conducting operational assessments to determine the most suitable alternative airports for their flights.
“For example, Singapore Airlines does not normally have a schedule to Yogyakarta. So this is a slot that we are providing to SQ and to all airlines,” Dudy said.
The diversion scheme is part of the government’s response to aviation disruptions caused by volcanic ash from Mount Anak Krakatau. Authorities continue to monitor ash distribution and its potential impact on flight safety.
Passengers traveling to Indonesia are advised to check directly with their airlines for updated schedules, arrival airports and other travel arrangements.
