Jakarta, ThedailyID — Three districts have been identified as the areas most affected by the volcanic activity of Mount Anak Krakatau, according to Indonesia’s National Disaster Management Agency (BNPB).

The affected areas are South Lampung and Tanggamus in Lampung Province, and Pandeglang in Banten Province. BNPB continues to monitor the spread of volcanic ash with local governments and relevant ministries and agencies.

BNPB Acting Head of the Data, Information and Disaster Communication Center Berton SP Panjaitan said residents should pay attention to potential health impacts, particularly on the respiratory system, eyes and skin.

“This includes the Ministry of Health, which has urged the public to pay attention to their health, especially their respiratory system, eyes and skin,” Berton said, as quoted by Antara on Monday (07/09/2026).

Residents who need to go outside are advised to wear protective equipment, including masks and glasses. They should also clean themselves after returning home.

Meanwhile, BNPB recommends that residents spend more time indoors while their areas remain affected by volcanic ash. Anyone experiencing respiratory problems should seek medical attention immediately.

The Health Ministry has also instructed health centers in affected areas to remain prepared. Authorities are also preparing for the possible activation of health command posts or a Health Emergency Operation Centre (HEOC).

The eruption has also disrupted air transportation. Airport authorities, the Transportation Ministry and the Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysical Agency (BMKG) continue to monitor the movement and spread of volcanic ash because it can threaten flight safety.

As of Sunday (06/09/2026) at 1 p.m. local time, six airports remained temporarily closed because of volcanic ash. They were Soekarno-Hatta and Budiarto airports in Tangerang, Pondok Cabe in South Tangerang, Halim Perdanakusuma in East Jakarta, Raden Inten II in Lampung and Husein Sastranegara in Bandung.

Transportation Minister Dudy Purwagandhi said authorities closed Husein Sastranegara Airport after checking conditions around the facility.

“The Transportation Ministry prioritizes flight safety and security. Airlines should not force flights to operate when conditions do not allow it,” Dudy said.

The Transportation Ministry and other authorities will continue monitoring the ash distribution. They will also update aviation information every four hours to determine whether flight operations can continue.

Meanwhile, the volcanic ash has not significantly affected sea transportation. Ferry services across the Sunda Strait remain operational, although port authorities have been instructed to remain alert.

Passengers using sea transportation are also advised to wear masks to reduce exposure to volcanic ash. Port operators should coordinate with relevant authorities if conditions change.
