Jakarta, ThedailyID — Apple is reportedly preparing to launch a subscription-based service that would allow customers to use its latest devices without purchasing them outright.
According to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, the programme, called Apple Upgrade, would cover products including the iPhone, iPad, Mac, and Apple Watch.
Customers would join the service through a paid subscription plan and make regular instalment payments over a fixed period instead of paying the full purchase price upfront.
The report said Apple could partner with fintech company Klarna, which offers buy now, pay later services and flexible payment options. Klarna’s existing app could also manage subscriptions and payment schedules for Apple Upgrade.
The rental period would vary by product. Customers could subscribe to iPhones and Apple Watches for up to 24 months, while Macs and iPads would have terms of up to 36 months.
According to Android Authority, customers would have several choices at the end of the subscription. They could return the device, keep it by paying the remaining amount, or upgrade to a newer model for an additional fee.
The programme would mark a significant shift in Apple’s hardware strategy. However, the concept is not entirely new.
Apple is expected to replace its current iPhone Upgrade Program, which only covers iPhones through monthly instalments.
The existing programme allows customers to upgrade after making 12 monthly payments under a 24-month financing plan. It also includes AppleCare+ with Theft and Loss coverage.
The reported launch comes as Apple faces higher production costs because of ongoing shortages of memory and storage chips. The subscription model could help customers manage rising device prices by spreading payments over a longer period.
Apple has not officially announced the programme or confirmed its launch date.
