Jakarta, ThedailyID — Three British Airways pilots fell ill with suspected food poisoning during an 11-hour flight from Hyderabad, India, to London Heathrow, prompting an airline investigation.
The incident occurred on Flight BA276, which operated on a Boeing 777-200ER, CNN Indonesia reported, citing international media.
The airline assigned three pilots to the flight. They rotated between flying duties and scheduled rest breaks throughout the journey.
During the flight, one first officer became seriously ill. He could no longer perform his duties and needed oxygen.
The other two pilots also developed symptoms that suggested food poisoning. Despite feeling unwell, they continued flying the aircraft safely to London Heathrow Airport. Their conditions reportedly worsened after landing.
British Airways said the incident never affected passenger safety.
The three pilots later filed aviation safety reports. Investigators also asked them to provide medical samples to determine the exact cause of the illness.
Investigators are focusing on the food the crew ate before departure. The pilots reportedly shared breakfast in the club lounge of the hotel where they stayed during a layover in Hyderabad.
A workers’ union had previously raised concerns about hygiene standards at the hotel.
British Airways said it has launched an investigation into the incident. The airline is also reviewing accommodation arrangements for flight crews in Hyderabad.
“The wellbeing of our colleagues is our highest priority, and we are reviewing crew accommodation at this location following several reports of isolated illness,” a British Airways spokesperson said.
The airline has not confirmed whether the hotel meal caused the suspected food poisoning. Investigators are still examining the case.
