Jakarta, ThedailyID — Indonesia has officially stepped up its campaign to host the 2026 FIFA ASEAN Cup. President Prabowo Subianto has backed the bid and plans to send a formal letter to FIFA to strengthen Indonesia’s proposal.
The announcement came after Youth and Sports Minister Erick Thohir met Prabowo at his private residence in Hambalang, Bogor, on Friday. Indonesia national team head coach John Herdman also attended the meeting.
Erick said FIFA had responded positively to Indonesia’s interest in hosting the tournament. However, the governing body has not made a final decision.
“The president supports the proposal and will prepare a letter so that Indonesia can be selected as host. Now we await FIFA’s decision,” Erick told reporters.
The tournament is expected to take place in September and October 2026 if Indonesia wins the hosting rights.
Erick, who also serves as chairman of the Football Association of Indonesia (PSSI), said Prabowo instructed him to coordinate with multiple ministries. The government must prepare several sectors before hosting a FIFA-sanctioned tournament.
The preparations include taxation, healthcare, security, transportation, and immigration. Erick said every ministry plays an important role in meeting FIFA’s hosting requirements.
He added that Indonesia has a strong opportunity to secure the tournament. FIFA could announce its decision within the coming weeks.
Indonesia has increased its efforts to become a major destination for international football. In recent years, the country has hosted several FIFA youth tournaments and international competitions.
The government also views hosting major events as part of a broader strategy to improve football infrastructure and raise Indonesia’s global football profile.
During the meeting, John Herdman highlighted the importance of government support. He said backing from national leaders gives players greater confidence and motivation.
Herdman also reaffirmed his long-term ambition of guiding Indonesia to its first FIFA World Cup appearance since independence by qualifying for the 2030 tournament.
Indonesia currently sits 118th in the FIFA world rankings. The country has strengthened its squad through domestic talent development and naturalized players while continuing to invest in its football ecosystem.
