Jakarta, ThedailyID — Salted fish and salted eggs are popular foods across many Asian countries. However, health experts have long warned that excessive consumption may increase the risk of nasopharyngeal cancer.
Nasopharyngeal cancer develops in the nasopharynx, the upper part of the throat located behind the nose. The disease is relatively rare globally but occurs more frequently in parts of Southeast Asia and Southern China.
According to medical experts, preserved foods such as salted fish can contain nitrosamines. These chemical compounds can form during the preservation process and have been linked to cancer development.
Research has found that frequent consumption of salted fish, especially from an early age, may increase the risk of nasopharyngeal cancer. The risk becomes higher when combined with other factors.
However, experts emphasize that eating salted fish or salted eggs occasionally does not automatically cause cancer.
Several factors contribute to the disease, including genetic predisposition, infection with the Epstein-Barr Virus Infection, smoking, environmental exposure, and dietary habits.
Salted eggs may also contain high levels of salt. Excessive sodium intake can contribute to various health problems, including hypertension and cardiovascular disease.
Health authorities recommend limiting the consumption of heavily preserved foods. Instead, people should maintain a balanced diet rich in fruits, vegetables, and fresh protein sources.
Doctors also encourage regular medical checkups for individuals with a family history of nasopharyngeal cancer or other risk factors.
Common symptoms of nasopharyngeal cancer include persistent nasal congestion, nosebleeds, hearing problems, headaches, and swollen lymph nodes in the neck.
Early detection significantly improves treatment outcomes. Therefore, people experiencing prolonged symptoms should seek medical attention promptly.
While salted fish and salted eggs may contribute to cancer risk when consumed excessively over long periods, experts stress that moderation and a healthy lifestyle remain the most important preventive measures.
