7 Proven Health Benefits of Owning a Cat, Study Finds

Jakarta, ThedailyID — Owning a cat is no longer seen as just a hobby, as studies show clear health benefits for both physical and mental well-being. In fact, simple daily interactions like petting, playing, and caring for a cat can trigger positive biological responses in the body.

These responses involve hormones, the nervous system, and emotional stability. Moreover, research shows that children can also benefit from early exposure to pets, especially in building stronger immunity.

1. Lowers Blood Pressure
Several studies show that pet owners, including cat owners, tend to have lower blood pressure. For example, a study in Australia involving 5,741 participants found consistent results even after adjusting for income and body mass index.

This effect is closely linked to the calming nature of interacting with pets. As a result, activities like petting a cat can relax the nervous system and reduce stress responses.

2. Reduces Stress and Anxiety
Physical contact with cats can trigger the release of endorphins, which help improve mood and reduce discomfort. Therefore, cat owners often feel more relaxed after spending time with their pets.

In addition, daily routines such as feeding and playing create structure. This, in turn, helps maintain emotional balance and reduces anxiety levels over time.

3. Lowers Risk of Heart Disease
Research from the University of Minnesota found that people who do not own cats face a 30–40% higher risk of dying from heart disease. Notably, the study tracked over 4,000 participants for a decade.

This protective effect likely comes from reduced stress and improved emotional health. Consequently, both factors play a key role in maintaining cardiovascular stability.

4. Helps Children with Autism
Studies from the University of Missouri show that interacting with pets can improve social skills in children with autism. In particular, children tend to engage more actively when animals are present.

Cats, known for their calm nature, can help build confidence in social interaction. Over time, this can also strengthen emotional bonds and improve family dynamics.

5. Relieves Muscle and Joint Pain
Cats produce a purring sound with frequencies between 20–140 Hz. Interestingly, some studies link these vibrations to therapeutic effects on the human body.

Researchers suggest that these vibrations may support tissue healing and reduce pain in muscles and joints. Although research is ongoing, the findings show promising potential.

6. Supports Mental Health
Interacting with cats can increase oxytocin levels, a hormone linked to bonding and emotional comfort. As a result, higher oxytocin levels often lead to improved mood and stronger emotional connections.

Furthermore, a study by Allen et al. (2020) found that playing with cats can lower cortisol levels. This helps reduce stress and promotes a more relaxed state.

7. Strengthens Children’s Immune System
Early exposure to pets helps train the immune system. In fact, children who grow up with cats tend to have better resistance to infections and respiratory issues.

This happens because the body adapts to various microorganisms from an early age. Therefore, children may also face a lower risk of developing allergies.

Overall, these findings show that cats offer more than companionship. Ultimately, they can play a meaningful role in supporting long-term health and well-being.
