Jakarta, ThedailyID — Authorities at Bandaranaike International Airport, Sri Lanka arrested a group of 22 Buddhist monks after discovering more than 90 kilograms of cannabis hidden in their luggage. (26 April)
The suspects had just arrived from Bangkok when customs officers flagged their baggage during routine checks. Officers noticed unusual modifications in several suitcases, which led to a more detailed inspection.
Upon examination, officials found the luggage had been fitted with hidden compartments designed to conceal illegal substances. Each individual allegedly carried around 5 kilograms of cannabis, indicating a coordinated smuggling attempt.
Authorities described the seizure as one of the largest cannabis discoveries ever recorded at the airport. The suspects are currently under detention as investigations continue.
Officials in Sri Lanka are now working to determine whether the monks were directly involved or used as couriers in a larger trafficking network. Investigators are also tracing how the drugs were transported from Thailand, where cannabis regulations have become more relaxed in recent years.
The case has drawn significant public attention due to the involvement of religious figures. Authorities said they will handle the investigation carefully, given its legal and social sensitivity.
Sri Lanka enforces strict drug laws, and individuals found guilty of trafficking face severe penalties. The incident also highlights increasing concerns over cross-border drug smuggling in the region.
