Jakarta, ThedailyID — British Prime Minister Keir Starmer said the United Kingdom could declare a national public holiday if England wins the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
According to The Guardian, Starmer hinted that the government would consider granting a bank holiday if Thomas Tuchel’s side wins the World Cup final, scheduled for Sunday, July 19, 2026.
“Regarding a bank holiday, I don’t want to tempt fate. Ask me again if we reach the final,” Starmer told reporters.
England will face Norway in the quarterfinals on Saturday, July 11. If they advance, they are likely to meet defending champions Argentina in the semifinals.
The World Cup final will take place in New Jersey on the following Sunday.
Starmer is expected to travel to the United States if England reaches the final.
However, reports suggest he may no longer be in office by the time any victory celebrations take place. If that happens, Andy Burnham, who is widely seen as a potential successor, would lead the official welcome for captain Harry Kane and the England squad.
Although officials have not announced a date, reports indicate the government could designate Friday, July 24, as a one-off public holiday if England lifts the World Cup trophy.
