Jakarta, ThedailyID — The UK is urging Muslims to use less water during wudu as the country promotes more efficient water use.

The campaign also encourages people from Asian communities to reduce water consumption when washing rice. Ofwat, the UK’s water regulator, issued the guidance on Friday, August 21.

The initiative forms part of Ofwat’s “Water Efficiency in Faith and Diverse Communities” program. The program supports projects that encourage different communities to adopt more efficient water-use habits.

One pilot project in Cambridge encourages Muslims to use just one liter of water for wudu before prayer.

The project involves South Staffordshire Water, the University of Cambridge’s Faculty of Divinity, Cambridge Central Mosque and other water organizations.

According to Ofwat, using a one-liter bottle during wudu could save up to 55 liters of water per person each day.

Water use during wudu has become a focus because some people reportedly use as much as 12 liters of running water across five daily ablutions.

The initiative aims to show that small changes in daily religious practices can contribute to wider water conservation efforts.

The UK regulator is also working with other faith and cultural communities to promote practical ways of reducing household water consumption.
