Jakarta, ThedailyID — Two people were killed in a shooting at a high school in Zamboanga, Philippines, on Tuesday (Aug. 18), according to local officials.

The incident took place at Ateneo de Zamboanga University Junior High School, which operates under Ateneo de Zamboanga University.

Zamboanga Mayor Khymer Adan Olaso said the two people killed were a student and the suspected gunman.

“The [suspect] used a high-powered firearm,” Olaso told DZMM radio, according to Reuters.

University President Ernald Andal confirmed that the shooting occurred on the school’s premises and had ended. He said there were no additional casualties.

“As of now, we can confirm two fatalities. There is no longer an active shooter,” Andal said.

The university said it was coordinating with authorities and would provide further information as it becomes available.

“We do not want these things to happen. We want to prioritize the safety of all our students,” Andal added.

The shooting comes after a separate incident at a high school in Tacloban City in June. That attack left three students dead and 20 others injured.

It also follows a series of shootings in Thailand. A shooting at Debsirin Nonthaburi School in Bangkok last week reportedly killed nine people and injured others.

Another shooting occurred days later outside a government building in Nonthaburi province, north of Bangkok.

The incidents have renewed concerns over gun violence and firearm regulations across Southeast Asia.
