Jakarta, ThedailyID — A 16-year-old hiker reportedly fell into the crater of Mount Slamet in Central Java while taking a selfie on Tuesday (Aug. 18).
The hiker was identified as M. Fahri Maulana, a resident of Sirampog, Brebes. He reportedly slipped while taking a photo near the crater at around 9 a.m. local time.
According to Semarang Search and Rescue Office Chief Budiono, Fahri had climbed the mountain through the Sawangan route.
“This afternoon, we received information from the Bosapala Sawangan base camp that a hiker had fallen into the crater of Mount Slamet,” Budiono said, as quoted by detikcom on Tuesday.
A joint SAR team was subsequently dispatched to the location to begin the search and evacuation operation.
Budiono said the victim’s condition was still unknown because no rescue team had reached the site at the time of the report.
“We have sent one team to join the joint SAR team to carry out the evacuation,” Budiono said.
The fall was estimated to have occurred around 30 to 50 meters from the crater rim.
The rescue operation was still underway as the team worked to reach the location and determine Fahri’s condition.
