Jakarta, ThedailyID — US President Donald Trump’s approval rating has fallen to 33%, marking the lowest level of his second term, according to a new Reuters-Ipsos poll.
The survey, conducted from Friday through Monday, included 1,166 respondents. Some 64% said they disapproved of Trump’s performance, while only 33% approved.
The latest figure fell two percentage points from the previous Reuters-Ipsos survey. It also matched Trump’s lowest approval rating during his first presidency, recorded in December 2017.
When Trump returned to office in January 2025, his approval rating stood at 47%, while 41% of respondents disapproved of his performance.
Approval Falls Amid Iran Conflict
Trump’s declining numbers come as the economic impact of the conflict involving Iran continues to affect American consumers.
The conflict has disrupted oil shipments through the Strait of Hormuz, contributing to higher energy prices in the United States. Annual energy prices rose 14.7% last month, according to the Consumer Price Index cited in the report.
Trump has defended the cost of the conflict, saying Americans could accept paying more for gasoline if it helped prevent Iran from developing nuclear weapons.
“It’s okay. … I will never apologize, I did the right thing,” Trump said on Friday in Garden City, New York.
Eight in 10 respondents in the latest Reuters-Ipsos poll also said they expected the Middle East conflict to last a long time.
That view was shared by 71% of Republicans, 80% of independents and 87% of Democrats.
Republicans Face Political Pressure
The conflict’s economic consequences are also creating challenges for Republican candidates ahead of the next US elections.
Republicans have sought to shift the political narrative by arguing that recent primary victories by left-wing candidates show the Democratic Party has embraced “socialism.”
Meanwhile, Decision Desk HQ estimated that Democrats had a 66% chance of regaining control of the House of Representatives and a 45% chance of taking the Senate.
The Senate figure represented a three-point increase from the previous month.
