Jakarta, ThedailyID — U.S. President Donald Trump will attend the 2026 FIFA World Cup final between Spain and Argentina at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey on Sunday (July 19, U.S. time), the White House confirmed.
White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt said Trump will first travel to New York on Friday to attend a FIFA reception at Trump Tower in Manhattan before heading to the championship match.
“This will be followed by his attendance on Sunday at the FIFA World Cup match between Spain and Argentina,” Leavitt said during a press briefing on Thursday.
She added that Trump is looking forward to watching the tournament’s final.
Leavitt did not confirm whether Trump would help present the World Cup trophy to the winning team after the match.
The question has drawn attention because Trump joined the post-match celebration after the FIFA Club World Cup final at MetLife Stadium earlier this summer.
During that ceremony, he remained on the podium after the trophy presentation and stood beside Chelsea captain Reece James as the club lifted the trophy.
Earlier, FIFA President Gianni Infantino suggested Trump would attend the World Cup final and take part in the trophy presentation.
However, Trump did not attend any other matches during the tournament, despite the United States serving as one of the host nations and advancing to the Round of 16.
His attendance follows a long-standing tradition of host-country leaders appearing at World Cup finals.
At the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar, Emir Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani joined Infantino in presenting the trophy to Argentina captain Lionel Messi. Before the celebration, the emir also draped Messi in a traditional bisht.
Russia’s President Vladimir Putin also took part in the medal ceremony after the 2018 FIFA World Cup final, continuing a tradition seen at previous tournaments.
