Jakarta, ThedailyID — President Prabowo Subianto has removed Purbaya Yudhi Sadewa as Indonesia’s finance minister and appointed Suahasil Nazara as his replacement.
The change took place on Monday, September 14, 2026. Prabowo formalized the decision through Presidential Decree No. 97P of 2026 on the dismissal and appointment of the finance minister for the remaining 2024–2029 term.
Suahasil took his oath as the new finance minister at the Presidential Palace. Prabowo led the inauguration ceremony.
“I swear that I will remain loyal to the 1945 Constitution and uphold all laws and regulations. I will carry out my duties with the utmost integrity, responsibility and dedication to the nation and state,” Suahasil said during his inauguration on Monday, September 14.
Suahasil previously served as deputy finance minister for nearly seven years. He first took the position in October 2019 under President Joko Widodo, when Sri Mulyani Indrawati served as finance minister.
He continued in the same role after Prabowo and Vice President Gibran Rakabuming Raka formed the new government in October 2024.
Born in Jakarta on November 23, 1970, Suahasil has an academic background in economics. He earned his economics degree from the University of Indonesia in 1994.
He later completed a Master of Science degree at Cornell University in the United States in 1997.
Before joining the government, Suahasil also worked in academia. He served as a lecturer at the University of Indonesia.
His government experience includes serving as Coordinator of the Policy Working Group at the National Team for the Acceleration of Poverty Reduction under the Vice President’s Office from 2010 to 2015.
He also served as a member of the National Economic Committee from 2013 to 2014.
Meanwhile, Purbaya had served as finance minister since September 8, 2025. He replaced Sri Mulyani after previously leading the Deposit Insurance Corporation (LPS).
Purbaya holds a degree in economics from Purdue University in Indiana, United States. He has held several government and economic positions throughout his career.
Among them, he served as Deputy for Maritime Sovereignty and Energy Coordination at the Coordinating Ministry for Maritime Affairs and Investment from May 2018 to September 2020.
Purbaya also served as an economic adviser in several coordinating ministries. His earlier roles included positions at the Presidential Staff Office and the National Economic Committee.
Before entering government, Purbaya worked in the private sector and financial research. His career included positions at Schlumberger Overseas SA, Danareksa Research Institute and PT Danareksa Securities.
The leadership change at the Ministry of Finance now puts Suahasil in charge of Indonesia’s fiscal policy for the remainder of the current presidential term.
