Jakarta, ThedailyID — President Prabowo Subianto and FBI Director Kash Patel discussed the repatriation of Indonesian cultural artifacts that smugglers had illegally taken to the United States during a meeting in Jakarta on July 22.
Culture Minister Fadli Zon said Patel personally handed over the artifacts during the meeting at Prabowo’s private residence in Kertanegara.
According to Fadli, Indonesia’s Ministry of Culture worked with the FBI to trace the origin of the artifacts through provenance research before authorities approved their return.
The collection includes cultural objects from Papua, representing the heritage of the Dani, Asmat, and Sentani Lake communities.
Fadli said the artifacts carry significant historical and cultural value for Indonesia.
He described the repatriation as an important step toward restoring the country’s cultural sovereignty and preserving its national heritage.
The minister also noted that the FBI has supported Indonesia in recovering stolen cultural property on several previous occasions.
Those efforts included the return of bronze statues and other artifacts taken from important archaeological and cultural sites.
The government plans to display the newly returned artifacts at the National Museum of Indonesia, where visitors will be able to study and appreciate the collection.
Fadli said the exhibition will help expand public understanding of Indonesia’s rich cultural history while highlighting ongoing efforts to protect the nation’s heritage.
