Jakarta, ThedailyID — Pope Leo XIV says he does not define himself primarily by his American nationality, describing himself instead as “a pope who happens to be American.”
Speaking in an interview with NBC News on Wednesday, July 29, the Chicago-born pontiff said his role as the leader of the Catholic Church extends beyond national identity.
“I see myself more as a pope who happens to be American. That does not mean I disregard the importance of being American,” Pope Leo said, according to AFP.
The 70-year-old pope made the remarks when asked how significant his American identity is to him. He said he deeply loves the United States but believes his greater mission is to serve the global Church and speak to people around the world.
When asked what he appreciates most about the US, Pope Leo pointed to the country’s founding ideals.
“I admire the principles and values America has stood for, including freedom, opportunity, and the openness that has welcomed people from around the world for generations,” he said.
The pope also spoke about his family history, revealing that his grandparents were immigrants. He added that his maternal ancestry includes both enslaved people and slave owners.
Pope Leo has consistently advocated for migrants, continuing a position championed by his predecessor, Pope Francis. He previously criticised immigration policies under US President Donald Trump, describing some measures as inhumane.
Despite his American roots, Pope Leo said he has no immediate plans to visit the United States. However, he expressed hope that he will return to his home country in the near future.
