Jakarta, ThedailyID — Former US President Barack Obama mocked Donald Trump’s White House renovation projects, comparing the redesigned building to a luxury restaurant opened by former Iraqi dictator Saddam Hussein.
Obama made the remarks during a campaign event in Cleveland, Ohio, where he supported Democratic gubernatorial candidate Amy Acton and Senate candidate Sherrod Brown ahead of the US midterm elections.
“I don’t know if you’ve noticed, but he seems very focused on renovating the house. He should be on HGTV,” Obama said, drawing laughter and applause from supporters, according to Fox News.
Obama then listed several projects under Trump, including a new ballroom, changes to the Rose Garden, a helicopter landing area on the South Lawn and extensive gold-colored decorations.
“He’s making the White House look like Saddam Hussein just opened a Cheesecake Factory. Everything is covered in gold ornaments,” Obama joked.
Trump’s renovation plans include several upgrades to the White House grounds and facilities. Workers installed limestone paving in the Rose Garden to accommodate outdoor events, while crews upgraded the Marine One landing area with granite.
The administration also plans to build a permanent ballroom to replace temporary tents used for large state events.
Beyond the renovations, Obama criticized Trump’s foreign policy, particularly the escalation of tensions with Iran. He argued that the conflict had contributed to higher energy costs for consumers.
Obama also defended the Iran nuclear deal, formally known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), which his administration helped negotiate. The United States withdrew from the agreement in 2018 under Trump’s first presidency.
During the Ohio campaign event, Obama urged voters to support Democratic candidates in the upcoming midterm elections. The vote will determine seats in Congress and influence the political balance in Washington.
