Jakarta, ThedailyID — The upcoming sequel to Michael is expected to revisit the child abuse allegations that Michael Jackson faced in the 1990s, with his nephew and actor Jaafar Jackson hoping the film will offer more insight into the pop star’s perspective.
Jaafar, who portrayed his uncle in the first film, said he had limited involvement in writing the sequel but hopes the story will allow audiences to better understand Michael’s side of the controversies.
“It is someone else’s story,” Jaafar said, referring to how the allegations have previously been portrayed, as reported by Variety on Thursday (20/08)
He argued that Michael’s own voice was not sufficiently heard when the controversies unfolded and said he hopes the sequel can provide a deeper look into the singer’s perspective.
The sequel follows the commercial success of Michael, which surpassed US$1 billion at the global box office in 2025. The first film focused on the early part of Michael’s career and ended with the release of his Bad album in 1987, before the first allegations emerged in 1993.
Jaafar said dividing the story into two films provides more room to explore Michael’s life and the circumstances surrounding the later years of his career.
He also described Michael as someone who continued to believe in the goodness of others despite the controversies and criticism he faced.
“I hope that comes through in the second film,” Jaafar said.
The sequel is currently targeted for release in late 2027 or early 2028.
