Jakarta, ThedailyID — US First Lady Melania Trump is set to bring Russian and Ukrainian representatives together at the White House on Thursday, November 5, following a six-day local ceasefire in Ukraine’s Kherson region.
The White House said Melania independently initiated diplomatic engagement between the two countries. Her efforts reportedly helped secure a temporary ceasefire in Oleshky and surrounding areas of Kherson.
“Melania Trump independently initiated diplomatic engagement to secure a ceasefire in Oleshky and the surrounding Kherson region,” her office said in a statement on Thursday.
Melania is scheduled to deliver remarks about the ceasefire at 11 a.m. local time at the White House. The meeting will bring representatives of the two countries together amid their ongoing war.
Meanwhile, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said he held a “very detailed, one-and-a-half-hour conversation” with US envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner on Wednesday evening. According to AFP, negotiations are expected to continue next week.
Earlier, Zelensky awarded Melania Ukraine’s Order of Princess Olga, First Class, in recognition of her humanitarian efforts.
The presidential decree cited her “significant personal contribution to humanitarian support for Ukraine, as well as active involvement in human rights and charitable activities.”
The recognition also follows Melania’s involvement in efforts to reunite Ukrainian children who were taken to Russia.
Last month, she helped facilitate a localized ceasefire around Oleshky. The arrangement allowed humanitarian assistance to reach residents and enabled civilians to evacuate after facing weeks of shortages of food and medicine.
The six-day truce provided a temporary pause in fighting to support the humanitarian operation. However, it did not represent a broader ceasefire or an end to the war between Russia and Ukraine.
