Jakarta, ThedailyID — Manchester City suffered their second straight Premier League defeat after losing 1-0 to Brighton & Hove Albion, opening the door for Arsenal to take the top spot.
Yasin Ayari scored the only goal of the match in the 11th minute. Manchester City failed to find an equalizer and left the game without adding to their points tally.
The result marked a sharp change in form for Pep Guardiola’s side. Manchester City won their opening seven matches of the season but have now lost their last two games.
Before facing Brighton, City suffered a 2-1 defeat against Aston Villa.
The Citizens remain on 21 points. Arsenal have the same number of points but have yet to play their ninth Premier League match.
A victory or draw would allow Arsenal to move ahead of Manchester City and take control of the league standings.
However, Arsenal face a difficult challenge this weekend. Bukayo Saka and his teammates will travel to Anfield to face Liverpool.
Liverpool will also have plenty to play for in the title race. A win over Arsenal would take the Reds to 18 points.
That result would leave Liverpool just three points behind the current leaders.
Manchester City recently beat Brighton in the Carabao Cup after recovering from a difficult position and winning the match on penalties. However, they could not repeat that result in the Premier League.
Brighton’s victory has added another twist to the early title race. Arsenal now have an opportunity to move clear at the top, while Liverpool can close the gap with a win at home.
The outcome of the Arsenal-Liverpool clash could further reshape the Premier League standings after Manchester City’s latest setback.
