Jakarta, ThedailyID — A magnitude 6.3 earthquake struck off the southern coast of the Philippines on August 5, 2026, triggering panic among residents but causing no immediate reports of casualties or major damage.

The quake struck at 12:14 p.m. local time, about 32 kilometers southwest of Sarangani Island, according to authorities. The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center said the earthquake occurred at a depth of 62 kilometers.

Many residents gathered at the time to receive government financial assistance, making the tremor especially alarming.

“The shaking was quite strong. I saw people panic. They ran and screamed,” Harly Sauro, a rescue official on Sarangani Island, told AFP.

“The local government was distributing financial assistance when the earthquake struck, so many people were at the site. Everyone is safe,” he added.

Sauro said initial assessments indicated no fatalities or significant structural damage.

The latest quake follows a powerful earthquake that struck Mindanao on June 8, 2026. That disaster caused building collapses, triggered landslides, and killed 76 people.

Authorities continue to monitor the situation as inspections take place across the affected area.
