Jakarta, ThedailyID — French President Emmanuel Macron congratulated Spain after its 2-0 victory over France in the 2026 FIFA World Cup semifinal, while praising the commitment and potential of the French national team.
In a post on X, Macron applauded Spain for reaching its second World Cup final.
“Bravo to Spain on this qualification,” Macron wrote.
Despite the defeat, Macron thanked Les Bleus for representing France with determination throughout the tournament.
“Thank you to Les Bleus for representing our country with such commitment. Tonight’s defeat is difficult to accept, but this team is still young and full of hope,” he said.
France entered the semifinal after an impressive run from the group stage. However, Didier Deschamps’ side struggled to break down Spain’s organized defense at Dallas Stadium on Wednesday, July 15.
Spain limited France’s attacking opportunities throughout the match. As a result, Kylian Mbappé and his teammates failed to make a significant impact despite dominating previous opponents earlier in the tournament.
The 2-0 defeat also marked France’s first two-goal loss at a World Cup in 16 years.
Spain will now advance to the 2026 FIFA World Cup final, while France ends its campaign in the semifinals.
