Jakarta, ThedailyID — Cybersecurity company Kaspersky has warned gamers about a wave of online scams posing as Grand Theft Auto VI (GTA VI) pre-order and beta websites. The fraudulent sites emerged after Rockstar Games officially opened pre-orders for the highly anticipated title on June 25, 2026.
According to Kaspersky, scammers created fake websites that closely resemble GTA VI’s official branding. The pages feature authentic trailers, promotional artwork, and design elements to appear legitimate.
When users click the “Pre-order Now” button, the fake sites prompt them to enter personal information and payment details to complete the purchase.
Instead of receiving the game, victims risk losing money and exposing sensitive personal data to cybercriminals.
Kaspersky identified one example in Portuguese that closely imitates the official PlayStation Store. The fake website includes five-star reviews, age ratings, and fabricated pre-order prices to strengthen its credibility.
After selecting the purchase option, users must provide their name, email address, phone number, and Brazil’s Cadastro de Pessoas Físicas (CPF) identification number.
The company said it has detected similar websites in multiple languages, suggesting that the campaign targets users across several countries.
In addition to fake pre-orders, Kaspersky uncovered websites claiming to offer leaked GTA VI beta versions. Cybercriminals promote these pages through tutorial videos on social media that promise safe downloads of the unreleased game.
However, Kaspersky warned that the downloaded files may install malware capable of stealing sensitive information, compromising personal accounts, or secretly running malicious software in the background.
Another scam targets cryptocurrency users through websites promoting digital tokens with names resembling GTA VI. These platforms also copy the game’s visual identity to appear authentic.
Kaspersky cautioned that interacting with such sites could result in the theft of users’ cryptocurrency assets.
“The release of highly anticipated games has always created significant opportunities for cybercriminals, and we have already detected fraudulent activity related to GTA VI,” said Olga Altukhova, Senior Web Content Analyst at Kaspersky.
Altukhova added that scammers deliberately launch these campaigns during periods of peak consumer excitement, when urgency often causes users to lower their guard.
To reduce the risk of becoming a victim, Kaspersky recommends that gamers:
- Download games and modifications only from official stores or trusted sources.
- Verify website URLs and company names before entering personal information.
- Use prepaid cards or dedicated payment services for gaming purchases.
- Enable multi-factor authentication (2FA) on financial and online accounts.
- Install reliable security software that can detect malware and block phishing websites.
