Jakarta, ThedailyID — Iran will close its airspace on Monday, July 6, to accommodate the main funeral procession for former Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.

State news agency ISNA reported that authorities will suspend all flights during the ceremony. The closure will affect the country’s main airports in the capital, Tehran.

According to Iran’s Civil Aviation Organization, Tehran’s Mehrabad International Airport and Imam Khomeini International Airport will halt scheduled flights while the funeral takes place.

Mehrabad Airport is expected to resume normal operations on Tuesday, July 7. However, Imam Khomeini International Airport will remain closed for an additional day.

Authorities also announced that they will close the airspace over Mashhad on July 9. Shahid Hasheminejad International Airport will suspend operations during the final stage of the funeral.

Meanwhile, flights across the rest of Iran will continue as normal on July 7 and July 8.

Iran officially began Khamenei’s funeral ceremonies on Friday, July 3, with official delegations from multiple countries in attendance.

The main funeral procession will take place in Tehran on Monday before moving to Qom on Tuesday.

On July 8, the procession will continue through Baghdad, Najaf, and Karbala. Religious and political leaders are expected to receive Khamenei’s remains before they are taken to key Shia holy sites.

The final burial ceremony is scheduled for July 9 at the Imam Reza Shrine in Mashhad, one of Shia Islam’s holiest sites.

Ali Khamenei was killed in a joint U.S.-Israeli strike on February 28, 2026. His death escalated tensions across the Middle East and triggered a sharp rise in global oil prices.
