Jakarta, ThedailyID — Jakarta plans to move all overhead utility cables underground within the next five years, with around 6,500 kilometers of networks requiring relocation.
Jakarta Governor Pramono Anung announced the target while inspecting the development of the Integrated Utility Network Facility (SJUT) on Jalan Soepomo, Tebet, South Jakarta, on Thursday, September 10, 2026.
“I am planning that within five years, all cables currently above the surface can be moved underground. If that can be achieved, Jakarta’s appearance will certainly be very different,” Pramono said, according to ANTARA, Friday, September 11, 2026.
Pramono acknowledged the scale of the project. Around 6,500 kilometers of cable networks will need to be handled across the capital.
“Whether five years is possible or not, around 6,500 kilometers need to be handled. But if this is managed comprehensively and does not depend only on the Public Works Agency, I am confident it can be done,” he said.
The program has a legal basis through Jakarta Regional Regulation No. 8 of 2025 on utility network placement. The regulation provides the framework for relocating overhead utility networks into underground SJUT infrastructure.
Pramono said communication cables are currently easier to relocate, while electricity cables require more time and technical preparation.
“There are basically two types of cables, communication and electricity. The ones that can currently be moved are communication cables, while electricity cables still require more time,” he said.
The Jakarta administration is also seeking help from private companies and regional government-owned enterprises to accelerate the project. Pramono said the scale of the work makes collaboration necessary.
“The involvement of the private sector is very necessary because the legal framework is already in place. We believe this is also attractive from a business perspective,” Pramono said.
