Indonesian Rupiah Slides Near Rp18,100 as Dollar Strengthens

Jakarta, ThedailyID — Indonesia’s rupiah weakened to Rp18,083 per US dollar at Tuesday’s close, slipping 74 points, or 0.41%, from the previous trading session.

The currency moved in line with most Asian peers, which also lost ground against the US dollar.

However, several regional currencies strengthened.

The Philippine peso gained 0.08%, South Korea’s won rose 0.29%, while the Hong Kong dollar edged up 0.01%.

Major developed-market currencies also traded mixed.

The euro added 0.01%, the British pound advanced 0.08%, and the Canadian dollar gained 0.08%. Meanwhile, the Australian dollar fell 0.31%, and the Swiss franc slipped 0.10%.

Lukman Leong, a currency analyst at DOO Financial Futures, said uncertainty surrounding Perry Warjiyo’s resignation as Bank Indonesia governor weighed on investor sentiment.

“The rupiah closed weaker against the US dollar amid negative sentiment following Perry Warjiyo’s resignation as Bank Indonesia governor,” Lukman said.

He added that expectations of a hawkish stance from the US Federal Reserve also supported the dollar.

Investors are closely watching the Federal Open Market Committee (FOMC) meeting, which is expected to provide fresh guidance on US interest rates.
