Jakarta, ThedailyID — Indonesia has officially launched its campaign for a non-permanent seat on the United Nations Security Council for the 2029-2030 term.
Foreign Minister Sugiono announced the candidacy during his speech at the UN General Assembly in New York on Friday, September 25, 2026.
Sugiono said Indonesia has contributed to conflict resolution through diplomacy and mediation, both within and beyond the region. Indonesia is also among the major contributors to UN peacekeeping missions.
He said Indonesia would continue its diplomatic efforts through humanitarian assistance, peacebuilding and active engagement across regions and institutions.
“With this spirit, Indonesia is putting forward its candidacy for a non-permanent seat on the UN Security Council for 2029-2030,” Sugiono said.
“Our commitment is clear: Fostering Unity, Advancing Peace,” he added.
Indonesia is campaigning under the theme “Fostering Unity, Advancing Peace.” The theme reflects its stated aim of bridging differences and strengthening international efforts to promote peace.
According to Sugiono, fostering unity means rebuilding trust in the multilateral system. Advancing peace, meanwhile, means upholding international law and making effective use of available mechanisms.
“Indonesia will work to keep dialogue open, build common understanding, and turn shared responsibility into concrete cooperation,” Sugiono said.
He also reaffirmed Indonesia’s commitment to upholding the UN Charter as part of efforts to maintain international peace and security.
Indonesia has previously served four terms as a non-permanent member of the UN Security Council. The country held the seat in 1973-1974, 1995-1996, 2007-2008 and 2019-2020.
Indonesia’s candidacy for the 2029-2030 term has also been documented by the UN and Indonesia’s Foreign Ministry, with the election scheduled for 2028.
