Jakarta, ThedailyID — Former Deputy Minister of Manpower Noel Ebenezer was sentenced to 4 years and 6 months in prison after a court found him guilty in a corruption case.
The verdict was delivered by the Jakarta Corruption Court on Wednesday. Judges ruled that Noel had been legally and convincingly proven to have committed corruption related to his position in government.
In addition to the prison sentence, the court also imposed a financial penalty. The judges stated that the punishment reflected both aggravating and mitigating factors presented during the trial.
Prosecutors had previously sought a prison sentence for Noel, arguing that his actions harmed public trust and undermined efforts to strengthen clean governance.
Meanwhile, the defense team said it would study the court’s decision before determining whether to file an appeal.
The case attracted significant public attention because Noel was a prominent public figure before joining the government. He was widely known as a social media activist and political commentator.
Moreover, the verdict adds to a growing list of corruption cases involving former public officials in Indonesia.
Legal observers said the ruling demonstrates the continued role of Indonesia’s anti-corruption institutions and courts in handling cases involving high-profile figures.
For now, Noel remains subject to the court’s ruling while legal options remain available through the appeals process.
