Jakarta, ThedailyID — The 31st United Nations Climate Change Conference, or COP31, will take place in Turkey from November 9 to 20, 2026. The summit will be held at the Antalya Expo Center.
The annual conference brings countries together to address the global climate crisis. Its impacts affect economies, communities, and ecosystems around the world.
COP31 stands for the 31st Conference of the Parties. The first conference took place in 1995. Since then, it has become a major international forum for climate negotiations.
Previous conferences have produced important global agreements. One of them was the 2015 Paris Agreement. The deal established a shared commitment to limit global warming. It also addresses climate impacts such as stronger storms, prolonged droughts, and rising sea levels.
At COP31, government representatives, business leaders, and civil society groups will gather to discuss climate solutions. Their discussions will cover ways to limit global warming and strengthen climate resilience. They will also address the needs of communities facing floods, droughts, and other climate-related risks.
In addition, delegates will negotiate greenhouse gas emission cuts and climate finance for developing countries. They will also discuss a fair transition for workers and communities as countries move away from fossil fuels.
This year’s main focus will be the Climate Action Agenda. It aims to identify and share practical solutions to climate challenges. Key topics include climate impacts on health and food systems, electrification of buildings and transport, and waste reduction. The agenda will also explore ways to make cities more resilient.
“COP31 is about implementing climate solutions and advancing the global energy transition in ways that drive economic growth, create more jobs, strengthen food security, improve health and safety, and provide affordable clean energy,” the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) said on its official website.
Meanwhile, Turkey’s Climate Minister Murat Kurum has been nominated as COP31 President. Australia’s Climate Minister Chris Bowen will serve as President of Negotiations. He will lead the conference’s negotiation process.
The summit comes amid several climate-related challenges. This year has seen record-breaking temperatures, El Niño-related weather disruptions, and growing energy concerns. Therefore, COP31 offers countries an opportunity to strengthen cooperation and accelerate climate action.
Priority topics will include zero waste, marine ecosystems, and food security. Other key areas include urban resilience, climate action implementation, and climate education for young people. Green industrialization, clean energy transition, and healthcare systems will also feature on the agenda.
