BMKG: June Sees 5,941 Earthquakes Across Indonesia, June 16 Marks Highest Daily Activity

Jakarta, ThedailyID — Indonesia recorded 5,941 earthquakes throughout June 2026, while June 16 registered the highest daily seismic activity, according to the Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG).

BMKG said the high level of seismic activity is normal because Indonesia lies at the meeting point of several active tectonic plates.

Residents felt 111 of the recorded earthquakes. Meanwhile, 47 earthquakes exceeded magnitude 5.0, while the rest remained below that level.

The agency also recorded three damaging earthquakes during the month. One of them triggered a tsunami.

A magnitude 6.7 tectonic earthquake struck Palu and nearby areas in Central Sulawesi on June 16, making it the most active day of the month for seismic activity.

Although residents did not feel most of the earthquakes, BMKG urged the public to stay alert and prepare for future seismic events.

“Most earthquakes are not felt, but people should remain alert and prepared. Learn mitigation measures to reduce risks during earthquakes and tsunamis,” BMKG said.

Indonesia ranks among the world’s most seismically active countries because it sits along the Pacific Ring of Fire, where several tectonic plates converge.
