Jakarta, ThedailyID — A recent study shows more students are changing majors due to concerns about artificial intelligence and jobs. The findings come from the 2026 State of Higher Education Study by Lumina Foundation and Gallup, based on a survey conducted in October 2025.
The online survey involved 3,801 students in the United States aged between 18 and 59, including those pursuing bachelor’s and associate degrees. Results show that 13% of bachelor’s students have switched majors due to AI concerns, while the figure rises to 19% among associate degree students.
Courtney Brown, a representative from Lumina Foundation, said the findings reflect a shift in how students view their future. She noted that many are influenced by widespread discussions about AI potentially replacing jobs across industries.
As a result, students now question whether their degree will lead to stable careers. Many reconsider their academic path based on job security after graduation.
Brown added that associate degree students are more likely to change majors because their programs are closely tied to current workforce demands. This makes them more sensitive to shifts in job market trends driven by technology.
However, uncertainty remains a major issue. Students still do not know which fields will stay relevant in the AI era. This confusion creates mixed trends. Some students move toward tech fields, while others avoid them.
Data shows students in technology and vocational fields are the most likely to consider switching. At the same time, these fields also attract many new students.
The findings show how AI is reshaping not only industries but also education choices. Students now face pressure to decide without clear visibility of future job demand.
